Out and About in Southwest Broward County: When Our Pets Get Sick

When Our Pets Get Sick

For those of us who have pets that we love and treat as family members, it is so hard when they get sick. After all, they can't tell us what hurts, or how they feel.

I have 3 cats, all brothers from the same litter. They are 8 years old and have rarely been separated. The first time they were not all together was when "Einstein" got very sick. He was in ICU for a week and it was touch and go. His condition was finally diagnosed as a disease very rare in cats. He had Polycythemia. That was about 5 years ago, and thanks to the outstanding doctors and hospital that we have here in Cooper City, he has led a normal, happy life. His doctors are not the average Veterinarians...they are Oncologists/Hematologists, Internists, Cardiologists, and of course his Primary Care Veterinarian.

Einstein goes for treatment every 6 weeks, and is used to it by now. He has had some difficult times, but he always turned it around with the help of his doctors. He also has a great attitude. He is so sweet and amazing....he lets the doctors treat him without any fuss on his part.

Early this morning Einstein was acting strange. He was squinting his eyes and fell on his side. He was having difficulty moving. Very quickly I decided to get him to Emergency. (his hospital is open 24 hours) I arrived at 6:00 am and they quickly rushed him into treatment. When I spoke to the Emergency Doctor, she said that he had a stroke. Luckily, we got there early. All through the day, his doctors were consulting from Cooper City to West Palm Beach. I was able to see him in the afternoon, and there was an improvement. He was laying in a large soft pet bed with an IV drip. Only the best for Einstein! His doctor was cautiously optimistic and said he said he would call me before he left for the day. By early evening when he called, Einstein had greatly improved and will hopefully be okay to go home tomorrow.

His 2 brothers, Panther and Gator have been looking all over for him, and are very sad that he's not here. All of our family and friends are worried about our Einstein. Hopefully tomorrow, we will all be together again!

It is so difficult when our pets get sick.

Einstein looks a good deal like my 15 year old tabby Jasper.  Pets are a big part of our family and when they need our help we don't ask we just do.  Hope Einstein is up and around soon.

Glad to hear that your pet looks to recover. I have a Chocolate lab and can understand how you feel.

Our pet got sick and it was a pretty quick death... nothing they could do by the time we realized something was wrong!

They are members of the family and should be treated as such. I'm sad this weekend, my slider turtle of 6 years "ran away from home" on Saturday. I had her in a cage outside to sun and the gate somehow opened. I know she's around her somewhere and I'm hoping she'll come back. Hugs to Einstein, I know he will be ok with all your loving care.

Liz - So sorry to hear about your pet. It is so sad when they get sick. I had to put my thoughts in writing. Thanks for your good wishes for Einstein :)

Hi Stefanie, I hope Einstein continues to do well and returns home to you and his fur brothers tomorrow.  I love my pets and sending you the best.

Stefani- Einstein is lucky to have such a caring and quick-acting mom.  I feel any pet owner's pain when their little friend is ill.  We've had 2 Brittany's go blind suddenly ... it's some sort of auto-immune disease.  When one of the times was here in Delray Beach, our vet did as yours is doing... he made calls from our area on up to Jupiter.  Glad to hear Einstein should be home soon.

Stefanie - I'm so sorry to hear about Einstein.  I hope he is feeling better soon.  It's true that animals do miss each other too.  I used to have two cats a few years ago (I'm a dog mama now) and they had grown up together.  When the older one passed of heart disease (she was 18yrs old), my other one (17yrs old) walked around for days crying for her buddy.  She passed two months later (she had no illnesses) and to this day, I still think she died of a broken heart.  Keep us posted on how Einstein is doing.

Hella - Thank you for your good wishes. Hopefully you will find your turtle soon!

Judith - His brothers are sooo sad. It's heartbreaking to see them that way, but they will be so glad when he is home! Thanks for your good wishes!

Kathy - So sorry to hear about your pet's blindness. It truly amazing how far veterinary medicine has come. Thanks for the well wishes.

Donne - Animals are so smart. They have such distinct personalities and feelings. As pet parents we all appreciate that. Enjoy your dog, and thank you for your good wishes :)

And to all of you...... a special MEOW thank you from Einstein :)

Toni and Debra - Thank you for your good wishes...unfortunately Einstein came home this afternoon, but had to go back into the hospital tonight. Once I got him home he was not well.....at least for tonight he is better off in the hospital. Hopefully we will get his illness under control with medication. It is just heartbreaking to watch them get sick :(

Debra and Kristin - Good news! Einstein is home and doing better. After all he has been through he is still very weak, but I am cautiously optimistic. I just made a spreadsheet for his medications! I am one who takes care of my pets just like I would take care of anyone in my family. He is such a precious, sweet cat, and he has so many people thinking of him. I will keep updating his progress...thank you :)

Stefanie, I'm glad to hear that he is home with you. I think they do better at home than in a strange environment. How is he doing today?

Stefanie,  I hope Einstein is doing better this evening.   It's awful when our pets get sick.  As you know, I've been through this.  It's not easy.  Good luck tomorrow!

Toni - Sorry it has taken so long to respond. It has been a nightmare with little Einstein. After an MRI and 3 nights in the hospital in Naples he is home! He got home today and it has been a long and difficult day, but I think he is making progress.

Elyse - I think we are making progress. this is not easy, but we will do everything we can to help him to recover. Veterinary medicine has come so far...it's amazing!
